Cross Country is a physically and mentally demanding sport. On top of the exercises that Mayflower Runners do to develop their physical strength, they attend lessons on efficient running techniques and undergo mental strength training. The student development plan designed by the teachers aim to nurture Mayflower Runners to be a highly disciplined and resilient team that stays focused and perseveres towards achieving our goals.
The coach, Mr Nicholas Tay, an avid runner himself, has being working with the students for a couple of years. Under his careful guidance, many students have achieved their personal best timing for the National Cross Championships.
Mayflower Runners train at various locations such as Bishan Park, Bedok Reservoir, and MacRitchie Reservoir. We also took part in competitions such as the Akira Swift Cross Country, Wings Cross Country and National Cross Championships to have our runners pitting their skills against the best in the country. Other than Cross Country, our runners also took part in the National Track and Field Meets for the short and long distance competitions.
Contrary to what many believe that Cross Country is an individual event, the teachers in the CCA aim to inculcate the values of teamwork and sportsmanship in the team. During training, the teachers conscientiously promote team bonding among the runners and it is encouraging to see Mayflower Runners supporting each other and pushing each other to outdo their personal best.
